A vegetarian diet can provide a wide variety of healthful, nutritious foods. Different types of vegetarian eat different things.Lacto-ovo-vegetarians avoid the flesh of all animals, both meat and fish.Pescatarian eat fish but no meat. Lacto-vegetarians consume dairy products but no eggs.Ovo-vegetarians consume eggs but no dairy.Vegans avoid all animal-based foods, including honey. Some people call themselves "semi-vegetarian," but most vegetarian and vegan societies do not accept this term. A vegetarian needs to make careful choices about their diet, and to eat a wide variety of foods to ensure that they meet their nutritional requirements. Some vegans may need to take supplements.
Almost all plant‐based foods offer high amounts of antioxidants and/or have some anti-inflammatory properties, which means they help stop the progression of disease by supplying nutrients that fight oxidative stress. Diets that are high in vegetables, fruit and other plant foods like legumes or ancient grains provide lots of nutrients, including antioxidants and phyto-nutrients, such as flavonoids, Resveratrol, Quercetin, beta-carotene and more; essential vitamins, such as vitamin C, E and A; trace minerals, such as manganese or phosphorus; and electrolytes like potassium and magnesium. A nutrient‐dense diet is beneficial for gut health, boosting immunity against illnesses, slowing down the effects of aging, protecting against cancer and heart disease, and preventing deficiencies that can lead to many negative reactions.
You can get many of the health benefits of being vegetarian without going all the way. For example, a Mediterranean eating pattern — known to be associated with longer life and reduced risk of several chronic illnesses — features an emphasis on plant foods with a sparing use of meat. Even if you do not want to become a complete vegetarian, you can steer your diet in that direction with a few simple substitutions, such as plant-based sources of protein — beans or tofu, for example — or fish instead of meat a couple of times a week. Only you can decide whether a vegetarian diet is right for you. If better health is your goal, here are some things to consider.
